If you've been asked to compare industrial printers — and you're not a technician — this checklist is for you. I manage purchasing for a mid-size production company. I don't run the machines day to day, but I own the contract, the RFQ, and the moment the invoice arrives. I've learned that selecting between a DTF printer, a wide-format sticker printer, and an industrial UV printer is mostly a purchasing problem, not a print technology problem.
If you're evaluating a Mimaki sticker printer or an industrial UV machine, use these six checks. They also apply to the Mimaki DTF TXF150-75 printer and to any system sold for garment decoration. Do them in order.
Step 1: Build the media list first
The fastest way to waste a budget is to compare models before naming the work. Sit with your production lead and write down what actually comes through the shop. Is it short-run labels? Adhesive vinyl for vehicle wraps? Flat sheets for store fixtures? DTF transfers for T-shirts? That list changes the machine class and the configuration.
Take the phrase “Mimaki sticker printer” as an example. Depending on the work, it can mean a roll-to-roll printer with a take-up unit and contour cutting capability, or it can mean a flatbed platform that prints on rigid pieces. The name alone does not tell you which one belongs on your floor. Put the actual media, including liner thickness, adhesive type, and lamination, into the testing requirements before you invite quotes.
Step 2: Quote consumables per square foot, not just the machine
The purchase price is the least useful number in a production printer proposal. Ask every vendor for a consumables model based on your estimated monthly volume. Include ink, cleaning fluid, printheads, waste, and — if the process requires it — transfer film and adhesive powder.
The phrase “UV printer industrial” keeps showing up in RFQs because buyers want to separate real production equipment from desktop units. An industrial UV printer can be a great fit if the ink and service costs are understood. If they are not, the base price won't survive a review with finance.
When I requested quotes for the Mimaki DTF TXF150-75 printer, the machine price was competitive. The first consumables quote did not include transfer film and adhesive powder, two things the printer genuinely requires. Once added, the total shifted by almost 30%. One follow-up call fixed it, but only because I asked. Get consumable details in writing before you compare.
Step 3: Separate DTF from sublimation before you commit
This is the place I almost made my worst assumption. I assumed that “sublimation printer DTF” was one broad category with two names. It is not. Sublimation is a dye process that bonds with polyester-containing fabrics, usually using sublimation ink and transfer paper. DTF, or direct-to-film, prints artwork onto transfer film, applies adhesive powder, and uses heat and pressure to put the design on cotton and other blends. The equipment and supplies are different.
Also be careful with the popular search phrase “how to convert a printer for sublimation.” Those instructions usually apply to smaller desktop printers. They can make sense for a low-volume or craft line, but they are not a reliable path for a production deadline. With a machine like the Mimaki DTF TXF150-75 printer, the film, adhesive, ink set, and curing workflow have to work together. A converted desktop system cannot carry that load. Ask the vendor which process the quote is built for and keep the warranty terms near that answer.
Step 4: Define a measurable color test before sign-off
A production color acceptance test should be numeric, not “close enough.” I ask three questions: What Pantone color standard applies? What Delta E is acceptable? What DPI is required for the smallest text or the customer's label?
For brand-critical colors, Delta E below 2 is considered good. Values from 2 to 4 are visible to a trained eye, and values above 4 are visible to almost anyone. Pantone's color matching guidelines frame that tolerance. If a printed label or decal is viewed up close, 300 DPI at final size is a common commercial benchmark. A large-format sign that is viewed from a distance can often be produced at a lower resolution, but that judgment should be explicit. Ask the vendor to test your file on your substrate and include the Delta E report in the acceptance paperwork.
Step 5: Buy the service response that keeps deadlines alive
I learned this through a missed delivery, not through a printer feature. In 2024, I paid a higher fee for a service agreement with a 24-hour response commitment. It looked expensive until we lost a machine five days before a client event. The agreement got a technician on site by the next afternoon. It bought certainty. If we had selected a vendor based solely on the service contract price, we would have waited days, and the event would have been a refund instead of an invoice.
Ask for response times in writing, including remote diagnostics, parts shipping, and technician arrival. Ask what happens if a part is back-ordered. No one can honestly promise zero downtime, but the good vendors will define how they recover when you have a hard deadline.
Step 6: Write your own acceptance process
The first time we bought an industrial printer, we didn't have a formal acceptance process. We signed the delivery form because the machine was physically installed. Two weeks later, I learned that the second-shift operator had not been trained. The machine worked, but output didn't improve because no one followed up.
Now every purchase file includes an installation checklist, a training matrix, a spare parts list, a service escalation path, a color proof report, and a consumables price sheet valid for a defined period. These are part of the purchase contract, not favors from the sales team.
Checks that still catch people
A few warnings I keep repeating.
First, don't assume “same specifications” means the same result. I made that mistake after comparing two machine proposals. The specs looked almost identical; the usable color gamut and ink layers were not. The vendor with the better settings made us a more reliable part of our own schedule. The lower quote would have looked better on paper and worse in production.
Second, if the sales process feels urgent, verify your own timeline before you say yes. It is okay to pay more for certainty when a deadline is real. What is not okay is letting an artificial deadline push you past the checks above.
There is no machine that fits every shop, but the buying process can still be standardized. When I evaluate a Mimaki printer or any industrial UV or DTF system, I care less about having the latest technology and more about knowing exactly what it will cost to run, to support, and to trust on a Friday night before a Monday install. That is the part that matters.
