UV vs DTF: The Money Question That Took Me a Year to Answer

When my boss asked me to research a new printing solution for our shop, I thought it was simple: get a UV printer, make stickers and small merchandise. Then I discovered DTF (direct-to-film) printers at a trade show. Suddenly I was comparing two completely different animals – and I had no idea which was the real fit.

It took me about six months and three costly missteps to understand the trade-offs. Here's what I wish someone had explained upfront, lined up side by side.

Why This Matters for an Admin Buyer

I manage purchasing for a 25-person sign and garment decoration company – roughly $180k annually across 8 vendors. My job is to make sure every dollar is justified and the internal teams are happy. No one thanks me for a machine that saves $2,000 on paper but costs $5,000 in rework.

Dimension 1: Initial Money – Sticker Shock vs. Gradual Bleed

UV Ink

UV ink is expensive – around $60–$80 per liter for OEM Mimaki cartridges. But it cures instantly under UV light, so you don't waste any drying time. And because it's a thick, durable ink, your coverage is less wasteful. For stickers and rigid media, we found that a liter could do roughly 300–400 full-color A3 sheets (depending on coverage). DTF Ink

Dimension 3: What You Can Actually Print

DTF: Designed primarily for textiles – t-shirts, hats, tote bags, polyester blends. The prints feel softer than screen prints and can handle full color + white. But DTF is not great for stickers. We tried it once: the adhesive layer didn't bond well to vinyl, and the stickers peeled within a week. I learned never to assume the proof represents the final product after receiving a batch that looked nothing like what we approved.

Dimension 4: Prevention vs. Correction (In Maintenance)

I'll be honest: I never thought about maintenance until the DT Printer clogged after two weeks of light use. The DTF head has a smaller nozzle and is more sensitive to dust. UV printers, by design, are more robust – the ink doesn't evaporate, so clogs are rarer. Mimaki's UJF series has a self-cleaning cycle that runs automatically. That saved me from a panic call to IT.

    • Your print volumes are low (<200 units/month) – then the ink savings don't matter as much

My final advice: Don't make a purchase based on machine cost alone. Run a side-by-side cost model for your top three jobs using real estimates from suppliers. And if you can, ask the dealer for a 30-day trial or a sample run. That's the only way to discover the gotchas – like we did with the DTF sticker disaster.

Save yourself the trouble I went through: verify everything before committing. It's cheaper to spend two hours on research than two weeks on rework.
